The Heat, looking ever so much like Samsung’s E900 that was released last year for the European market, provides users with an elegant and versatile choice in a phone. The Heat is available in two color schemes: black onyx and gold. With its simple lines and discreet touch sensitive buttons, the Heat definitely seems to be on.

Does BlackBerry equal 'CrackBerry'

Does BlackBerry equal 'CrackBerry' Melissa Mazmanian is researching how BlackBerry users balance the efficiency and lifestyle effects of their gadgets. Photo courtesy / MIT Sloan
One might expect a doctoral student conducting research on BlackBerry usage to own one or more of the handheld devices. But Melissa Mazmanian, a fourth-year MIT Sloan doctoral student, doesn't own one, and she prefers it this way.

Mazmanian's study of how people use the BlackBerry in their everyday lives has already drawn attention in the Wall Street Journal and The Independent and on National Public Radio. Her research won an Academy of Management award in its division last summer.

When Mazmanian first began her research, which has been funded by the National Science Foundation, she decided it was best not to have preconceived notions, and thus she never purchased a BlackBerry.

"My goal is to try to figure out the personal and social challenges that go into negotiating norms. I've observed that people struggle with when and where is it okay to use their BlackBerry," Mazmanian said.

"I'm lucky because people want to talk about their BlackBerry use. It's an easy project to describe and it hits enough of a nerve with people that they're eager to share. They light up when talking about how it affects their lives," she said, adding, "I've heard of people who wake up in the middle of the night to check their e-mail, others who set their alarms on the BlackBerry and check their messages first thing in the morning."........

Powering Small Portable Electronics

Powering Small Portable Electronics
Juicing up your cell phone or iPod may take on a whole new meaning in the future. Scientists at Saint Louis University in Missouri have developed a fuel cell battery that runs on virtually any sugar source from soft drinks to tree sap and has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium ion batteries, they say.

For consumers, that could mean significantly longer time to talk and play music between charges. The new battery, which is also biodegradable, could eventually replace lithium ion batteries in a number of portable electronic applications, including computers, the researchers say. Their findings were described today at the 233rd national meeting of the American Chemical Society.

This study shows that renewable fuels can be directly employed in batteries at room temperature to lead to more energy-efficient battery technology than metal-based approaches, says study leader Shelley Minteer, Ph.D., an electrochemist at Saint Louis University. It demonstrates that by bridging biology and chemistry, we can build a better battery thats also cleaner for the environment.

Using sugar for fuel is not a new concept: Sugar in the form of glucose supplies the energy needs of all living things. While nature has figured out how to harness this energy efficiently, researchers only recently have learned how to unleash the energy-dense power of sugar to produce electricity, Minteer says.........

Yet another fashion phone - LG Prada (KE850)
It seems that a growing number of mobile phone producers have realized that fashionable phones sell good. So, we are in luck, because this year brings us a new designer phone to lust for, to crave and to cherish once we get it. Don't you think mobile phones are becoming the most perfect accessory?

Anyhows, Prada and LG went ahead and created a new fashion technical miracle, a mobile phone which is completely touch screen operated. The press release says:
"The PRADA Phone by LG introduces the world's first advanced touch interface which eliminates the conventional keypad making the overall usage experience a highly tactile one. An extra wide LCD screen maximizes visual impact, allowing the user to benefit from several key features of the phone, including the 2 megapixel camera featuring Schneider-Kreuznach lens, video player and document viewer capacity. Above all, these features contribute to the phone's beautifully sleek and simplistic appearance.

Glowing icons on the face of the phone disappear when not in use to reveal a pure, un-adulterated black exterior. Turn your cell phone into an anklet

Turn your cell phone into an anklet

Belt clips have always been popular accessories for cell phones, but what if you don''t wear a belt? What are you supposed to do then?

Wrap it around your ankle, of course! Assuming you don''t have 1) pockets, 2) a purse, 3) any fashion sense, or 4) a shred of self-consciousness, consider HTL-Wireless'' patent-pending CPC Strap. Featuring five Jewelry Strap Loop Attachments to "unleash your inner creativity," the adjustable strap fits anything with a 5- to 20-inch circumference and is available in two styles: universal (for clamshell and candybar phones) and Razr (for Motorola RAZR phones).

HTL-Wireless thinks pairing a Bluetooth headset with an ankle-strapped cell phone shows the world that you''re a "trendsetter [who doesn''t] mind being the center of attention." If you agree, then click over to the order page. But be quick about it. Only the first 1,000 CPC Straps are priced at $20; after that, they''re $50 each. And I thought you couldn''t put a price on fashion. Silly me.

Developing Ultrathin Digital Camera

Developing Ultrathin Digital Camera
Engineers at UC San Diego have built a powerful yet ultrathin digital camera by folding up the telephoto lens. This technology may yield lightweight, ultrathin, high resolution miniature cameras for unmanned surveillance aircraft, cell phones and infrared night vision applications.

"Our imager is about seven times more powerful than a conventional lens of the same depth," said Eric Tremblay, the first author on an Applied Optics paper published February 1, 2007, and an electrical and computer engineering Ph.D. candidate at UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering. Eric is working with Joseph Ford, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Jacobs School who leads the camera project within UCSD's Photonic Systems Integration Lab. Ford is also affiliated with the UCSD division of the California Institute of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Calit2.

"This type of miniature camera is very promising for applications where you want high resolution images and a short exposure time. This describes what cell phone cameras want to be when they grow up," said Ford. "Today's cell phone cameras are pretty good for wide angle shots, but because space constraints require short focal length lenses, when you zoom them in, they're terrible. They're blurry, dark, and low contrast."........

Apple Finally Releases The iphone

Apple Finally Releases The iphone
The iPhone is now a reality, and it looks like a very handy device running an embedded form of OS X. By combining all the best features taken from Palm, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Apple's own iPod, the company has created a device that doesn't do everything, but does all the fun stuff very well. This could just be the single device that a lot of us have wanted, but be prepared to wait. The domestic rollout isn't until June, and Asia won't see the phone until 2008!

The form factor is similar to an iPod: 4.5 inches tall, 2.48 inches wide, but still very slim at 0.46 inches thick. There are no controls other than a single Home button as everything else is done through the touch screen. The official numbers are 5 hours of talk time, and any video usage comes out of that five hours. Strictly as a music player, the iPhone will deliver sixteen hours of play, and that's about on par with my Nano. The 4GB model is going to cost $499 with a two year cellular contract, and the 8GB is $599.

Go below the fold and dish through the demo screens with me!

I'd just like to say a mighty thanks to MacRumors. I jumped on their feed to watch the keynote live because my other sources were having technical difficulties. The above image is from the nice kids at Engadget's coverage.........
