The four men, all gang members, wrapped their phones and accessories in plastic and inserted them into their rectums "far enough to reach their intestines," Ramon Arevalo, director of the maximum security Zacatecoluca prison, said.........

UK And US Companies Sold Mobile Phone Tapping

UK And US Companies Sold Mobile Phone Tapping
Reporters Without Borders has learned that a British company, Silver Bullet, and a US company, Verint Systems (a subsidiary of Comverse Technology), sold equipment for intercepting mobile phone calls to the Vietnamese intelligence services. The source of this information, the UK-based Jane's Defence Weekly, said a subsidiary of Israel Aircraft Industries acted as intermediary in some of the sales.

"We are appalled to learn that our phone calls with Vietnamese cyber-dissidents have been monitored with equipment provided by European and US companies," the press freedom organisation said. "Coming a year after it emerged that Yahoo! cooperates with the Chinese police, this new case reinforces our conviction that telecommunications companies must be forced to respect certain rules of ethical conduct. In particular, they should be banned from selling surveillance equipment to repressive governments".........

A Digital Take On The Streets Where We Live

A Digital Take On The Streets Where We Live
A walk down the street may someday be as rich with information as the web, thanks to the emergence of location-aware technology.

Not surprisingly, MIT is at the vanguard of this movement with a project called Electronic Lens (eLens), an initiative of the MIT Media Lab. Headed by William Mitchell and Federico Casalegno, eLens is defined by its focus on benefits for local citizens.

Several research and commercial projects are also exploring the potential of location-aware services. Most rely on a tagging system - for example, physical tags attached to buildings - that can then be scanned and read by mobile camera phones.

eLens is exploring the next wave of communications technology - building interactions that depend on where you are and what you want to know or say. In the eLens team's vision, you could aim your mobile phone at your child's school and start a voice thread to discuss cuts in after-school programs. Or you could let passersby know that the local folk music club serves great vegetarian meals.

The project began with a metaphor, that of an electronic lens that can be aimed at civic institutions and a "viewfinder" that makes these institutions more transparent. Pointing eLens at a train station, for example, might let you retrieve the day's schedule for different tracks. Pointing it at a museum might list current exhibits and upcoming lectures.........

Samsung T609 Review

Samsung T609 Review
The first thing you'll notice about Samsung T609 is the color. This flip phone comes in a pearl white that shimmers and has a distinct feel to it. Upon flipping the phone open, users will notice that the screen and keypad do not lay flat against each other at a 180-degree angle. The T609 has a slightly tilted display, which is easier to view than most phones. This configuration also allows for users to talk easily with the phone up to their mouth. As weird as it might sound, it's been a while since we came a cross a phone with talking in mind, rather than an emphasis on features.

Samsung did a great job with the UI on this device. It is very similar to the one found on the T809, T509, and other T-series phones. Incredibly easy to use and very easy to navigate, people looking for a fast interface without clutter will be very pleased with what this phone has to offer. The keypad is also practical with numbers, a basic d-pad, and a few other buttons. The keys are raised off the device and have a plastic, toy-like feel to them. In this case, that is a good thing.........

The slider green phone with cartoon drawing on it boasts a 2-inch color screen with resolutions of 176 x 220, 1.3 megapixel of camera, 128MB of RAM, MP3 player and miniSD memory card slot.
