Mobile Phone Airship
A zeppelin will replace all the terrestrial mobile phone antennas in Switzerland - if a Swiss inventor has his way.
Should Kamal Alavi's project for the high-tech airship take off, the worlds of mobile telephony and data transmission would be turned on their heads.
Not only would the technology, called High Altitude Platform Systems (Haps), make the current 1,000 earth-bound antennas redundant, it would drastically reduce radiation.
A Swiss of Iranian extraction, Alavi is a former aerospace engineer turned entrepreneur who heads his own firm, Stratxx. Together with a team of 50 scientists, he is preparing a 2007 test run of the airship, which he has named the "X station".
Thanks to a GPS steering system developed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the 60-meter long helium-filled balloon will remain stationary at 21 kilometres above the earth.
A small-unmanned aircraft outfitted with a mobile phone antenna and other devices for transmitting digital data will be attached to the zeppelin. The X station has been equipped with giant propellers to help counter the almost constant buffeting from the wind.
Solar panels will supply the energy to propel the airplane and antenna. Underneath will be a platform containing technical equipment, conceived by Ruag, the large Swiss aerospace concern.........

LG LP4100 Breathalizer Phone
LG Korea has gone a step further with the party gimmicks by introducing their latest breathalizer phone, the LG LP4100 which has a built-in breathalizer capabilities that records your blood-alcohol level. When blown into by an intoxicated partier, it will gives a warning and displays a nifty little animation of a car swerving on a road and crashing into traffic cones. I guess this type of animation won't really wake them up.
The good thing is it also features a Drunk Dial Preventer. It can be programmed to block selected numbers in the address book (bosses, moms, exes, pizzerias) if breath analyzer records a blood-alcohol concentration over 0.08. It's already a hit in Korea, where more than 200,000 of LG's Breathalyzer-type phones have been sold.........

With a Cellphone as My Guide
Koichi Matsunuma uses his specialized cellphone in Tokyo.
By JOHN MARKOFF and MARTIN FACKLER
Think of it as a divining rod for the information age.
If you stand on a street corner in Tokyo today you can point a specialized cellphone at a hotel, a restaurant or a historical monument, and with the press of a button the phone will display information from the Internet describing the object you are looking at.
The new service is made possible by the efforts of three Japanese companies and GeoVector, a small American technology firm, and it represents a missing link between cyberspace and the physical world.
The phones combine satellite-based navigation, precise to within 30 feet or less, with an electronic compass to provide a new dimension of orientation. Connect the device to the Internet and it is possible to overlay the point-and-click simplicity of a computer screen on top of the real world.........

Boosting Cell Phone Performance
Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and industry collaborators have developed improved methods for accurately measuring very faint thermal "noise"--caused by random motion of electrons--in electronic circuits. The technique may help improve the signal range, data rate and battery life of cell phones and other wireless communications devices.
Low background noise typically translates to better performance in electronics, such as longer ranges and clearer signals or higher information-carrying capacity. However, noise too low to measure means that circuit designers cannot tune the system for optimal performance. The NIST research focuses on CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) transistors, which are inexpensive and widely used in integrated circuits for wireless devices. Noise levels for CMOS transistors have, until now, been too low to measure accurately in much of their signal frequency range (1 - 10 gigahertz), and as a result CMOS circuits may be poorly matched to wireless transmission systems, resulting in significant signal loss.
In a collaboration with IBM Semiconductor Research and Development Center (Essex Junction, Vt.) and RF Micro Devices (Scotts Valley, Calif.), NIST has developed and demonstrated the capability to reliably measure the noise in CMOS devices before they are cut from silicon wafers and packaged. This is thought to bethe first method for on-wafer noise measurements directly linked to national standards for thermal noise power. The new measurement methods were described June 12* at the IEEE Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits Symposium in San Francisco.........

LG Fusic Phone
LG's standalone music phone the funkily titled Fusic was recently launched with a lot of pomp and show. The new LG Fusic promises to give the competition sleepless nights with its dedicated music menu, sleek interface and awesome sound quality. In fact the phone with its external navigational wheel looks like a long lost distant cousin of the iPod!
To make the event happening, LG invited some A List celebrities and the whose who of the music industry for the grand launch. Okay time for some name dropping, there was Janet Jackson, Dem Franchize Boyz, DJ AM and Jermaine Dupri played host. So what's make Fusic da bomb? Well as per LG not only consumers are entertained for hours thanks to the music player, the 1.3 MP camera but the phone also boasts of an FM Transmitter. The phone also features Bluetooth Stereo support and comes with four changeable faceplates in black, pink, blue and green.
"LG Mobile Phones has become an industry leader by successfully adding music and entertainment capabilities to mobile phones. The launch of FUSIC is so revolutionary because FUSIC is the first complete portable music player on a cell phone. Not only can you download and listen to full-length songs on FUSIC, but it also has a FM radio transmitter to play the radio," said Jon Maron, senior director of marketing, LG Electronics MobileComm. "And since we have had such a great time with Jermaine Dupri in the past and feel he embodies the spirit of technology and music, we wanted to invite him to help us introduce the world to this groundbreaking and innovative device with a Hollywood bash".........

Cell Phone Emissions Excite The Brain Cortex
Electromagnetic fields from cell phones excite the brain cortex adjacent to it, with potential implications for individuals with epilepsy, or other neurological conditions. This finding is published in Annals of Neurology, a journal by John Wiley & Sons. The article is also available online via Wiley Interscience (www.interscience.wiley.com/journal/ana).
More than 500 million people in the world use cell phones which emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Though a number of studies have looked at the effects of EMFs on the body, few have focused on their effects on the brain. Such effects could be harmful, neutral, or beneficial and might be especially important for individuals with conditions involving cortical excitability, such as epilepsy.
Scientists in Italy, led by Paolo M. Rossini, M.D., Ph.D. of Fatebenefratelli, used Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to investigate brain function under exposure to electromagnetic fields from a common type of cell phone. Their study reports the effects of EMF exposure on brain physiology for the first time.
The scientists developed a double-blind study in which 15 young male volunteers were exposed to EMF signals from a GSM 900 cell phone for 45 minutes. They measured Motor Evoked Potentials (MEPs) during motor cortex TMS before, and immediately after EMF exposure, and also one hour later.........

Digital Still Camera and Mobile Phone in One
Finally, a digital still camera with a nice amount of megapixels combined with a decent phone setup. Sony Ericsson has come out with a model K800i (coming soon) that will rival most mediocre digital cameras (like the one I currently own) and a number of cellphones at the same time.
The Cyber-shot- digital camera and 3G phone seem to have everything a busy summer enthusiast would want. The camera includes a flash too! The cellphone has an included music/video player, uses a memory stick (Memory Stick Micro- (M2-) support) and includes an internal 64MB of memory. With a 72 voice sound it seems Sony Ericsson is ahead of the game.
Check out the phone/camera here. Will probably be released in the UK first. Contact Sony Ericsson for more information.........
