Better Performance, Longer Battery Life For Cell Phones And Gadgets
Anyone who uses a cell phone or a WiFi laptop knows the irritation of a dead-battery surprise. But now scientists at the University of Rochester have broken a barrier in wireless chip design that uses a tenth as much battery power as current designs and, better yet, will use much less in emerging wireless devices of the future.
Hui Wu, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Rochester, a pioneer in a circuit design called an "injection locked frequency divider," or ILFD, has solved the last hurdle to making the new method work. Wireless chip manufacturers have been aware of ILFD and its ability to ensure accurate data transfer using much less energy than traditional digital methods, but the technique had two fatal flaws: it could not handle a wide range of frequencies, and could not ensure a fine enough resolution within that range. Wu, together with Ali Hajimiri, associate professor of electrical engineering at California Institute of Technology, surmounted the first problem in 2001, and has now found a solution for the latter.
When a cell phone or a laptop using WiFi or Bluetooth communicates wirelessly, the data is transmitted at very specific frequencies. One person can talk on a cell phone at a frequency of 2.0001 gigahertz, and someone else nearby can talk at 2.0002 gigahertz, and neither one will pick up the other's conversation. In order to make sure it is both listening for and sending information on exactly the right frequency at all times, the phone must maintain a very accurate and stable clock, which is generated by a special circuit called "phase-locked loop." This circuit consumes a dramatic portion of the battery usage on wireless devices.........

Linking Digital Images To The Cameras That Created The Image
Child pornographers will soon have a harder time escaping prosecution thanks to a stunning new technology in development at Binghamton University, State University of New York, that can reliably link digital images to the camera with which they were taken, in much the same way that tell-tale scratches are used by forensic examiners to link bullets to the gun that fired them.
"The defense in these kind of cases would often be that the images were not taken by this person's camera or that the images are not of real children," said Jessica Fridrich, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering. "Sometimes child pornographers will even cut and paste an image of an adult's head on the image of a child to try to avoid prosecution.
"But if it can be shown that the original images were taken by the person's cell phone or camera, it becomes a much stronger case than if you just have a bunch of digital images that we all know are notoriously easy to manipulate".
Fridrich and two members of her Binghamton University research team - Jan Lukas and Miroslav Goljan - are coinventors of the new technique, which can also be used to detect forged images.
The three have applied for two patents related to their technique, which provides the most robust strategy for digital image forgery detection to date, even as it improves significantly on the accuracy of other approaches.........

Lucent Files Suit Over Xbox 360
Is the Xbox 360 at risk? Lucent's suit against Microsoft, filed last month, accuses the software and hardware giant of violating a patent relating to the MPEG-2 codec. This could potentially mean game over for MS since DVD movies and some in-game cut scenes are encoded with in MPEG-2 format. As per a partner with a law firm that focuses on IP Law, Lucent may have a stronger case than NTP did against Research in Motion. RIM recently paid over $600 million in its settlement to NTP.
So what does this mean for Xbox 360 owners? Well, not much right now. These types of cases could take up to two to three years to hit the trial phase. Plus, like RIM, Microsoft would much rather settle with Lucent than to let its next generation gold mine be pulled off the market.........

Global 3G-Powered Notebooks
Cingular Wireless and HP - two long-time collaborators in the delivery of innovative wireless services - today announced a marketing agreement that will integrate Cingular's BroadbandConnect into future HP business notebooks.
HP is expected to be the first company to provide customers with global 3G capabilities when it expands its range of broadband wireless notebooks to integrate Cingular's critically acclaimed UMTS/HSDPA-based technology later this year. Customers will be able to enjoy wireless access to email, the Internet and critical business data 1 both in the United States - either with BroadbandConnect or high-speed EDGE services - and abroad in more than 100 countries worldwide in which there are UMTS or GPRS/EDGE networks available. BroadbandConnect service is expected to be available in most major U.S. markets by the end of this year.
"Cingular is a pioneer in the deployment of national, high-speed wireless data services and in the integration of wireless wide area network capabilities in portable computers," said Jeff Bradley, vice president, business data services, for Cingular Wireless. "We look forward to putting this wireless experience and expertise to work for HP as we team with them to bring notebook customers the global 3G wireless broadband technology of choice".........

Inflatable USB memory
This USB memory is called the 'Flashbag'.
So far so good, but what is unique with this product is that it gets inflated when you fill it up with data. When the USB memory is full, the flashbag looks like it's going to explode. It's only a concept model, so you can't buy it yet though. Interesting idea and product, or what do you think?

Motorola's Ming PDA Smartphone
A Techie Diva reader points us to Motorola's "Ming" PDA Smart Phone which made an appearance at CTIA this year, and somehow we managed to miss it. Available only in Hong Kong, this Linux-powered PDA sports a translucent cover that holds a very thin double-sided speaker. This clam shell features a music player, Bluetooth, FM radio and a 2 megapixel camera.
But why call it Ming? The press release explains that the "Ming means bright, clear, overt or open, clear-sighted and to understand." The touch-screen beauty also has business card reader to easily store information in a snap. [Thanks Anna].........
