Many content-related industries have filed a joint reply (PDF) with the government on the effectiveness of the DMCA and the challenges that lay ahead for copyright. As every one expected, the document is a celebration of the DMCA, and the industries are pushing for even more egregious abuses of technology to fatten up their bottom lines.

They argue that when someone buys a CD, one is buying the right to listen to the CD as it is. The purchase of a CD does not mean that one can reproduce the music. One has not bought the rights of reproduction from the copyright owner, which is why, it is stated that you can't rip songs out and place them into your MP3 player. The rights that in question here are the exclusive rights of reproduction that has been conferred on the copyright owner.
